There are many factors at play which can affect whether or not burglars would decide to target a specific home. In order to make your home more unappealing to potential burglars, it is extremely important that you, as a homeowner, are aware of what these features are, as they will enable you to take the necessary precautions to protect your home and your family

To help you protect your home and to give you a better idea of what burglars are looking for when they choose houses to target, we’ve put together a list of 4 features which may attract burglars to a home:

1. Location

The proximity of a home in relation to easy escape routes, such as highways, main roads and open plots of land can be a big determining factor in whether or not it will be targeted. Burglars may be more inclined to target a specific house if they feel as though they can get away relatively easily.

2. Easy access

It should come as no surprise that one of the main reasons why burglars decide to target specific homes is due to the home’s perceived accessibility. If a burglar believes that a door or window would be easy to unsecure or break, this will make your home more of a target. In a similar vein, if you leave your windows doors and garage doors open or unsecured, you greatly increase your risk of being targeted. It is important to always keep doors and windows shut when you leave home and to invest in security doors, burglar bars and security shutters as an additional safety measure.

3. No alarm/security system

When it comes to finding an easy target, burglars specifically target homes that don’t appear to have an alarm or home security system. By installing alarm systems and motion sensors, you are making your home a more difficult target and burglars are more likely to move on to easier targets.

4. Leaving expensive products visible

Your home will automatically become a target if you leave expensive items in view of passers-by. If potential burglars are able to see expensive items such as laptops, jewellery and TVs lying around, especially near an unsecured window, they will be far more likely to target that home as they know they are all but guaranteed to find more items of value. It is best to never leave expensive objects in plain sight and if you are leaving your home for the day or going away on holiday you should consider closing your curtains.

Hopefully by being aware of these four main features which attract burglars to homes, you will be able to implement the necessary security measures to adequately protect your home and your family from potential burglaries.
